Nature in a bottle at Zaharchev Winery and Distillery in Vardar River Valley
Wine has been cultivated in the Republic of Macedonia since ancient times, and Macedonian wines were already a sought-after and precious luxury at that time.
Wine is produced here in many variations - from dry to sweet, from red to rosé to white and sparkling wines from the Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. The autochthonous red Vranec grape variety is expanded in a single variety or blended with the international grape varieties to form a cuvée. Viticulture in North Macedonia, like in neighbouring countries, has a long tradition. The climate in North Macedonia is mixed Mediterranean-continental, the vineyards cover around 22,400 hectares. 80% of the vineyards are planted with red wine varieties, in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, especially with local varieties such as Vranec, Prokupac, and Kratosija. The white grape varieties are the Serbian Smederevra, Zilavka from Bosnia-Herzegowina, the Welschriesling as well as some Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winegrowing regions in which "Vrvno Vino" with the controlled designation of origin is produced is divided into 3 regions: Povardski (Vardartal), Pcinsko Osogovski, Pelagonijsko-Polski.
