Monastery to wine estate in limestone rich Chablis

Explore the History of the Property as a Monastery to Present-day as a Winery

The story of the winery started from Chablis a few centuries ago. Today it has its headquarters at the Obédiencerie of Chablis in a monastery building built in the ninth century. The Cannons of St Martin of Tours was producing wine exactly there.

Domaine Laroche – from one Generation to the Next

Domaine Laroche Winery continues a thousand year long tradition and it is partially true. In 1850 Jean-Victor Laroche, a humble vineyard worker bought a small plot of land in Chablis. Father has continually passed it to son with each generation since this time. Today, the winery is owned by Michel Laroche and is operated by technical director, Grégory Viennois.

A Serious Approach towards Chardonnay Production

The Domaine’s vineyards are in various parts of the Chablis area in the northern part of the Burgundy region. Domaine Laroche Winery takes care of the Chardonnay grape variety very seriously. This variation depends on controlled fruit-yield regulation so each plot is cared for by one worker. This person oversees the whole process including pruning, picking, and sorting. The workers constantly select the best cuttings to produce new vines. Domaine Laroche is in the process of becoming entirely organic, this is very rare in Burgundy. The soil is dominately limestone. This contributes to the qualities of minerality that Chablis is famous for. Altogether Domaine Laroche owns 100 hectares of vineyards in the Chablis appellation. Of this, 6 hectares are Grands Crus, 30 are Premiers Crus, 63 are Chablis and the remainder are Petit Chablis appellation. They make 10 wines from the Premiers Crus, each distinct because of its terroir. The Grand Cru produces four wines among which the La Réserve de l’Obédience is reputedly the best.
