Piekenierskloof Wines is open to visitors throughout the year and welcomes the to the De Tol Tasting room for a unique and unforgettable Grenache experience with four perfect pairings. The total cost of the pairing is R120 per person and prior booking is advised to avoid disappointment. The pairing experience begins with a Grenache Blanc with biltong macaroni and cheese truffles and a Waldorf salad. Potato and pea croquettes follow this on a mango and mint salad paired with a Grenache Rose. The next pairing is Ostrich Carpaccio, beetroot and fresh fruit salad with rocket and cheese paired with the Grenache Noir. The final course in the pairing is the flagship Heirloom Red with a bobotie and lentil spring roll and peanut butter dressing. Although Piekenierskloof Wines is open to visits throughout the year, the most exciting time to visit is in September when the winery celebrates Grenache Day.

Piekenierskloof winery: along the mountain ridge The story of the Piekenierskloof winery begins in 1923 when South African Johan Abraham Van Zyl found himself settling in the undeveloped and ragged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof. Soon Johan began to plant vines along the mountain ridge and as they grew and produced grapes, the need for a winery became evident. In 1957 the first winery was established, and it was called the Citrusdal Winery. A few years later, Johans son took an interest in the wine making process and began planting Chenin Blanc and Muscat vines nearby to his fathers’ vineyards. …
