LIBOURNAIS IN BORDEAUX – A HISTORY OF FANTASTIC WINES

Let us explore the exciting district of Bordeaux a little bit more and visit to the French wine district of Libournais, or Le Libournais as the French call the area. It is named after the historic capital of Libourne were good wines were exported  abroad already in the Middle Ages.

Some of the most famous wines in the world are found here under some of these following appellations: Saint-Émilion AOC, Pomerol AOC and Fronsac AOC, just to mention of few of these famous wine regions in Libournais.

Although much of Bordeaux wines are blends of two or more grape varieties, the wines produced on the left side of the Garonne river are quite typical Cabernet Sauvignon blends, while the wines produced on the right side of the river consist mostly of blends where the primary grape is Merlot, such as in Pomerol, a region which produces wines of a unique and well-known quality of both Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Like everywhere else, the taste of each grape is completely dependent on plant location, soil and climate and each of the appellations listed above can thus get a completely different wine profile. We mention Pomerol again with its exceptional and unique soil. Pomerol, for example, with its 50 acres and with its blue distinct clay makes the grapes toothache and gives their famous wines a rich body, good acidity and a wonderful long and tasty finish in the palate. We think perhaps of the most expensive wines in the world like Château Pétrus, which sells at a fantastic price.
