History of Galluccio wine region

The Galluccio wine region is one of the most important wine appellations in Campania and the whole of Italy, and it has a long history of producing high-quality wines. The Galluccio wine region has been producing wines for centuries. In fact, it was already known as a producer of wines in the 18th century BC when Greeks inhabited the area, and many native grapes were growing there. Later, induced by the great location and propitious climate, Romans continued winemaking in Galluccio. However, under various people's leadership at different times, the region only acquired appellation status in 1997 and became an authorized Galluccio DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). Since then, it has never ceased producing premier quality wines.

Galluccio wine region terroir

Galluccio wine region has volcanic soil, very similar to its neighbouring appellations, especially those near the city of Naples. The soil is dark and rich in potassium, basalt and minerals, fostering the balanced sweet taste of wine. The vineyards are placed at an altitude of 300-500 metres. The Galluccio region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, which is very promising for vine growing. In Galluccio, the summers are warm, dry, and clear, while winters are cold, wet and partly cloudy. The temperature typically varies from 2 °C to 30 °C and is rarely below -2 °C or above34 °C.

Galluccio wine Charcteristics

Galluccio appellation produces red, rosé and white wines. The authorized grape varieties are: Aglianico, Aglianico-Piedirosso and Falanghina. Galluccio rosé and red wines contain at least 70% of Aglianico, while the Galluccio white wine is mainly produced from the Falanghina grape variety, which has a Greek origin. The minimum alcohol content for rosé and white wine is 11%, and 11.5% for Galluccio red wine. Galluccio Rosso, or red, is rich ruby-coloured, getting even darker with ageing, with sweetened tannins from the prolonged sunshine due to late harvest and ripening, and with the flavours of red fruit like cherry and sweet spices such as cinnamon. Galluccio Rosato, meaning rosé, has an intense pink colour, fruity and floral notes and is pleasantly acidic. As for Galluccio Bianco, or white wine, it is straw-yellow in colour and has floral aromas, such as acacia and fruity flavours of pears, lemon, and grapefruit.
