History of Krnjevac Wine

Wine-making in Serbia has a long history which dates all the way back to the prehistory period. The country's viticulture scene was rich during Roman times but once the Ottoman Empire conquered Serbia, wine production disappeared for a long time. Yugoslavia was among the top ten wine producing countries in the world and had a peak production of over 6 million hectolitres. There were low quality standards in every stage of the wine-making process. The 1980s saw a sharp decline in production and exports, which continued into the 1990s with the Breakup of Yugoslavia. As Serbia's economy collapsed, it suffered from hyperinflation and adverse trade balance. But in the 2000s, Serbian wine-making started to recover and, soon afterwards, jump towards quality and distinction.A bunch of small and medium-sized privately owned wineries entered the market and are often run as family businesses. They have very high standards for quality and taste. Krnjevac sub-region was no exception. Throughout the 2000s, it also saw a lot of development in terms of wine.

Food to pair with Krnjevac Wine

1. Gibanica

Although gibanica is common in countries such as Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia, it is mainly associated with Serbia. It is a traditional pie-like dish made with phyllo dough or yeast dough that combines many different flavors to achieve the perfect taste. The most popular variety of this pie is common in Croatia as gužvara, or "crumpled cake". It starts with soaking the sheets of phyllo dough in a mixture of fresh milk and eggs before layering it, so it can be baked. It pairs well with Krnjevac wines.

2. Pasulj

Pasulj is a traditional Serbian dish prepared with white beans. The beans are usually simmered with sausage, bacon, or ham and vegetables such as onions and carrots. Paprika, bay leaves, and garlic are common as seasoning. Pasulj is a typical Slavic comfort food and it's very popular throughout the region, especially in neighboring countries. It's recommended to serve it with some bread or raw onion on the side. This traditional dish goes well with Krnjevac wines.

3. Pljeskavica

Pljeskavica, a Serbian national dish also known as the Serbian hamburger, is a flat patty made of minced meat, with some spices mixed in. It's traditionally served with pita bread and raw red onions on the side. Traditionally, the meat is placed inside a special kind of flatbread called lepinja, which should not be too dry or crumbly but moist and warm. The perfect pljeskavica should be juicy, perfectly spiced, and topped with a creamy cheese (such as kajmak). Serbian national dish pairs well with Krnjevac wines.
