When Lodi Appellation First Emerged

Lodi, California, is well-known for its great wine grape farming history, dating back to the 18th century, precisely from the mid-1800 when Joseph Spenker, a voyageur who came to the West, started growing wine grapes. According to annals, he was looking for fertile land to grow plants; although he had tried the plants of a different ilk, he found out that this land is the best for growing grapes. Since then, Lodi grapes' production area continues to expand, growing over 110,000 acres of grapes in the area today. Likewise, the Lodi appellation is the largest in terms of ancient vineyards in the country, with a general rule being that wine labeled as the old vine has aged to at least 50 years and ancient vine over one hundred.

Type of Lodi Terroir

Being notably far from the coast, the Lodi region still enjoys a moderate, Mediterranean climate, which is the best fit for viticulture. An ideal climate for growing good grapes is important, and it depends on essentials like plenty of water, fair heat during the day, and easy breezes from the Pacific. It does not frequently rain in the Lodi region; however, its proximity to the Mokelumne River and San Joaquin river guarantees to keep the temperature down in Lodi. The water from each river discharges into the Suisun and San Pablo bays, beyond which lie San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. As for Lodi soil, sandy clay loam soils dominate in the region, which is mineral-rich and therefore plays a great role in producing high-quality wine and long-lasting flavor. Lodi terroir is the prominent feature of this region, which allows the creation of excellent wines that truly represent the region.

Lodi wine Characteristics

The grape variety Lodi is known for most is Zinfandel, with its diverse array of flavors from berries to smoky tobacco, giving the wine a unique taste, impossible to mix up with other wines. The Lodi grapes are juicy and sweet, that offer minimal color variation but have extremely delicious flavors. The primary aromas of Zinfandel include mouthwatering fruits like apricot, raspberry, and blackberry, but also tamarind and sweet tobacco. Mixing their sweetness with the bitterness of alcohol and sourness of tannin appears to be a really perfect match that creates an amazing taste.

Try some Lodi Zinfandel to start, with lots of sweet cherries and blackberry notes with a subtle tannic quality. The Lodi region is also known for its selection of low-acid wines and less sweet, similar to what can be found in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Amarone wines. There are plenty of grape varieties; these include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and even rare varieties such as Aglianico, Picpoul Blanc, Nebbiolo, Tannat, and Vermentino.

White Wines from Lodi Wine Region

Chardonnay is used to produce white wine and is the second most-produced one after Zinfandel. These are green-skinned champagne-colored grapes, not very sweet naturally. However, winemakers in California have noticed that these grapes tend to take aromas of acid fruits like green plum, apple, and pear on Lodi soil, but these notes are not too strong. Among Lodi California wines, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc seem the best for white wine lovers. Here is an incomplete list of white wines of Lodi:

  • Chenin Blanc Clairette
  • Kerner
  • Gutedel
  • Marsanne
  • Picpoul
  • Roussanne
  • Silvaner
  • Torrontés
  • Verdelho
  • Vermentino

Red Wines from Lodi Wine Region

As for red wine lovers, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot would be the best option for the primary grape varieties of Lodi. Both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are dark-blue coloured grape varieties, best for red wine-producing. Merlot is sometimes used for blending with others and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, which increases tannin significantly and creates escalated wine taste. The list below will give you an idea of Lodi red wines made specifically from these grapes:

  • Aglianico Alicante Bouschet
  • Bastardo (Trousseau)
  • Cinsault
  • Carignan
  • Charbono (aka Bonarda)
