Serra de Tramuntana - Costa Nord Wine Region

Serra de Tramuntana is a Spanish Vino de la Tierra zone that is located on the northern coastal area in the island of Mallorca in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Vino de la Tierra indication is one step below the Denominación of Origen. Serra de Tramuntana region is made up of communities lying between the Formentor headland and Andratx's south-western coast covering 18 municipalities. The Tramuntana mountain range, which dominates the horizon along the coast here, inspired the name of the wine-growing region. This region has a rich history and range of winemaking processes, with winemaking traditions reaching back to 123 BC.

Where is the Serra de Tramuntana wine region?

Serra de Tramuntana wine appellation is located on the north coast of Mallorca in the region of the Balearic Islands. Surrounded on three sides by the Balearic Sea, the area accounts for about one-third of Mallorca, a Spanish island in the western Mediterranean. You can visit this wine appellation by ferry or airplane which are available easily throughout the day. It takes around 7 hours by ferry from Barcelona and Valencia. The Serra de Tramuntana boasts approximately 40 hectares and 5 wineries that are controlled by the Regulatory Body.

History of the Serra de Tramuntana wine region

Winemaking in the Serra de Tramuntana dates back to 123BC when roman started settling the island. The wine production and viticulture tradition were passed down for generations and by the end of the 14th century, the wines from the Serra de Tramuntana were already exported to mainland Europe through the Port of Palma. Malvasia and Chardonnay are two major white grape varieties that have existed in the vineyards on Serra de Tramuntana since the middle ages. The region was devastated by the Phylloxera infestation in the late 19th century and recovered not until the late 20th century. The Serra de Tramuntana was granted Vino de la Tierra status in 2007.

The terroir and geography of the Serra de Tramuntana wine region

The Tramuntana Mountain range and its mountain folds encompass the majority of the Serra De Tramuntana wine region, forming several valleys and ridges. These valleys and ridges have a variety of microclimates that were ideal for grapes. Although there are many different types of soils in this area, limestone, and loams dominate across the region, making an excellent viticulture base. Temperatures are usually lower than on the island's flatter due to the cooling effect from the Tramuntana mountain ranges and cool winds from the Balearic sea.

Malvasia and Chardonnay are two important white grape types that have been grown in Serra de Tramuntana vineyards since the Middle Ages. Other grape varieties that are authorized in the Serra de Tramuntana region are as follows:

Red Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Callet and Manto negro.

White Varietals: Malvasía, Moscatel, Moll, Parellada, Macabeo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.

Lobster a l'Americaine

Lobster a l'Americaine is a traditional French dish that can be prepared with a number of ingredients. Common components include lobster flesh, carrots, celery, shallots, tomato paste, garlic, dry white wine, cognac or dry sherry, chicken or fish stock, bay leaves, olive oil, thyme, heavy cream, butter, and chopped parsley.

Lobster is cooked in a tomato sauce with shallots, garlic, tarragon, and thyme before being flamed with cognac for a truly fantastic feast. Make sure to read the flambe recommendations before you begin. Although cooking the lobster in its shell adds flavor, you can remove it before cooking if you like.

Pinchitos

Pinchitos are grilled chicken, lamb, or hog meat strung on wooden sticks and roasted over charcoal. To season the meat, spices like cumin, coriander, and cinnamon are commonly used. This summer meal is substantial, but it can also be served at any BBQ gathering.

Pinchitos is typically served with lemon wedges and bread on the side and is best paired with red wines from Serra de Tramuntana.

Places to visit in the Serra de Tramuntana wine region

Coll de Sa Bataia

The Coll de Sa Bataia is Mallorca's third highest pass located in the Tramuntana mountain range between the Puig de les Covasses and the Massanella hill, on Mallorca island. The pass connects the municipality of Escorca in the island's northern and hilly region with the town of Inca, making it an ideal access point for ports such as the spectacular Coll dels Reis (Sa Calobra) or accessing the Coll de Sóller through the Massanella hill tunnel.

The Coll de Sa Bataia (579 m) marks the junction of the PM213 and the west coast road C710, which is around 400 meters from the high point. The West Coast Road from Pollenca (47 m), 20 km to the east, and the PM213 from Inca, 16 km to the east, both lead up to the pass.

Es Coll Baix

Es Coll Baix is a beautiful beach surrounded by turquoise blue water overlooking the unforgettable view of the Calla des Coll Baix descending into the bay. The beach sits on the La Victoria peninsula, which is also home to the ruins of the Talaia de la Victoria watchtower. This awesome place is a must for a visit that is located on the Alcudia Peninsula in the northeast of Mallorca. 

Coll Baix is a stunning natural beach in an isolated and remote place surrounded by a mountainous landscape. The trek to the beach is difficult due to the steep terrain, and the final tiny portion of the 30-45 minute climb is even over cliffs. However, the payoff is substantial. On the walk to the beach, there are various spots with spectacular views of the beach, sea, and mountains. Those who enjoy walking can start from Alcudia itself, notably from Eclipsi street, which leads to Cam de s'Alou.
