Diversity of Styria Wine Region

Climate, Sub-Regions, and Grape Varieties

Styria, Austria includes the sub-regions of Vulkanland, Weststeiermark, and Sudsteiermark. Across these three sub-regions, the vineyards cover approximately 4500 hectares of land. The wines of Styria are unique in that they account for only 10% of the wines produced in Austria. As a result of this, most of the Styrian wines produced are consumed within the region itself.

Thanks to the location of Styria, the climate is Mediterranean with continental influences. This climate provides a long growing season that allows for grapes to develop flavors that have a high level of complexity.

The wine-growing regions of Styria are dominated by the Welschreisling grape, although the varietals grown differ according to the sub-region. In Vulkanland the most important grape grown is Sauvignon Blanc and there is also a focus on Traminer. Traminer grapes are used to provide light and aromatic wines with a unique spice profile. Sauvignon Blanc is also the most commonly grown grape in Sudsteiermark, but this region is also well known for its excellent Chardonnays which are known there as Morillon. In Weststeiermark the indigenous grape varietal is Blauer Wildbacker. This grape is used to make the fantastic Steiermark Schilcher Rose wine.

Red Varieties: Pinot Noir, Saint Laurent, Zweigelt, Blauer Wildbacher

White Varieties: Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat Blanc, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc
