Where is the Trebbiano D'Abruzzo Wine Region?

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC is a subregion of the bigger Abruzzo wine region that is located in central Italy. The vineyards are grown in a large area of Abruzzo's four provinces - l'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara, and Teramo.

Unique terroir of Trebbiano D'Abruzzo  appellation

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC is cultivated in a sizable area of Abruzzo, Italy.

The wine region is located in the provinces of Chieti, Aquila, Pescara, and Teramo. The region covers the coastal half of it, and moves inwards near the center to include the Alto Tirino plateau, Subequana Valley and Peligna Valley.

The great terroir of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is characterized by sloping land, altitude, shallow and rocky soils with a Moderate Mediterranean climate. The soil composition in Abruzzo varies depending on how close it is to the Adriatic sea. Closer to the sea, there are Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments while towards the Apennine peaks, one can find Mesozoic and Tertiary limestone deposits. The soil composition in the Chieti province consists mainly of dolomite, limestone, and marl.

The grapes used to produce Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC are obtained only from vineyards located in hilly or highland land, whose altitude does not exceed 500 meters above sea level and exceptionally 600 meters for those facing the sun.

History of Trebbiano D'Abruzzo DOC

Trebbiano is an ancient grape type that is grown in Italy. It has been found to be more suited for a specific terroir in Abruzzo and was bred during the Roman era. In 1972, the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Controlled Designation of Origin was established for the territory of Abruzzo. This means that only wines produced within these territories can be called Trebbiano d'Abruzzo.

What is Trebbiano D'Abruzzo Wine?

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC is a white wine made with the local Trebbiano Toscano grape (min 85%) as well as other locally grown, white varieties.

When Trebbiano grapes are grown in low yields and properly vinified, they don't offer heavy body or power structure, but instead manifest other qualities like light wines with high quality. These wines stand apart from their peers due to the meticulous care taken in their vineyards and winery. Such attention to detail results in exceptional quality.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wines are produced mainly from Trebbiano grapes, but other varietals like Cococciola, Passerina, and white Malvasia can also be used in the production. Trebbiano D’Abruzzo wine is a straw-yellow hue with a greenish tint and is made from an indigenous grape variety. Fermentation and aging take place in stainless steel vats, and when served chilled to 12°C it has an unmistakable taste of apricots and apples along with other harmonious aromas.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wines come in three distinct types:

  • Trebbiano d'Abruzzo: yield - not higher than 14 t/ha, alcohol content - not lower than 11.5%.
  • Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Superiore: yield - not higher than 13 t/ha, alcohol content - not lower than 12%.
  • Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Riserva: yield - not higher than 12 t/ha, alcohol content - not lower than 12.5%. The wine goes on sale no earlier than 18 months after harvest.

Food to Pair with Trebbiano D'Abruzzo Wine

Local food, seafood and seasoned cheeses combine perfectly with these full-bodied, fragrant wines of Trebbiano D'Abruzzo that offer an explosion of flavors.

Spaghetti al cartoccio

Spaghetti al cartoccio is a classic Italian dish that brings the taste of Abruzzo to your plate. Chieti has a signature dish called Al Cartoccio which is cooked using an intricate method. It's made using olive oil, garlic, clams, squid, shrimp, prawns, tomatoes, white wine, parsley and spaghetti that are all wrapped up in foil and baked.

The wine used in the dish should, ideally, be Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. The seafood is cooked with garlic, and the rest of the ingredients are added when the liquid from the seafood has evaporated. The pasta is tossed with the sauce, and the combination is wrapped in foil, then baked until the pasta is al dente.

Treccia Cheese

Treccia is a traditional Italian mozzarella-style cheese. This variation of mozzarella is characterized by its braided shape and shiny surface. It is made from pasteurized cow's milk or, sometimes, water buffalo milk. Its texture is stringy, elastic, and soft, while its flavours are fresh, delicate, and milky.

Treccia di mozzarella cheese is normally preserved in a salty solution and enjoyed plain or paired with cold cuts and fresh vegetables.

Linguine with Walnuts

Linguine con le noci is a classic Italian recipe originating from the region of Abruzzo. It includes linguine pasta, garlic, walnuts, olive oil, parsley, and salt. The pasta is boiled in salted water until it's al dente for the ultimate texture and flavor.

Olive oil, garlic, walnuts, parsley, and salt are whisked together - with a little cooking water from the pasta - to create a flavorful sauce. This is then combined with your cooked noodles and served straight away. For an extra kick of heat, sprinkle over some chili flakes!
