The Balatonfured – Csopak wine region is one of three wine regions in Hungary that reference Lake Balaton. Evidence from the Roman period shows that wines have been produced in the region since the second and third centuries, with the earliest records dating back to 1082. The tops sites in Balatonfured – Csopak are the Szigliget Fortress, Tihany Town and the Pannonhalma Archabbey.

Centuries-Old Wines on the Lake Balaton    

The Balatonfured – Csopak region contains approximately 2300 hectares of planted vineyards on an area of land that covers almost half of the northern shores of Lake Balaton. The vineyards are split between two zones, the first of which is Balatonfured – Csopak proper, covering 17 villages. The other zone is Zanka which has 7 villages.

The wines of Balatonfured – Csopak are soft and smooth have a wonderful elegance and level of complexity. They have a bright acidity and can be quite heady.

The climate of Balatonfured – Csopak is not extreme. Mild winters are followed by Spring months that tend to arrive early. Summer is relatively long but nor very hot and the autumn is bright and dry. The surface area of Lake Balaton acts as a mirror, reflecting the sunlight onto the vineyards and providing the region with a Mediterranean microclimate.

Balatonfured – Csopak terrain is extremely varied and includes Phyllite slate, Permian red sandstone, Triassic limestone, dolomite, basalt, basalt tuff, rendzina and forest soils.

A Wide Portfolio of Balatonfured – Csopak Wines

Balatonfured – Csopak produces a wide portfolio of very different wines. International grapes are grown here in smaller quantities and include grapes such as Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The white grapes that are grown in the region are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Semillon and Muscat Blanc.

The grapes that are grown in Balatonfured – Csopak are only of the highest quality, particularly those from the south-east vineyards on the slopes overlooking Lake Balaton. The quality of the grapes is thanks to the light and heat that is provided by the lake and that provides the perfect conditions for the vines.

Balatonfured – Csopak is most commonly known for its Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), the finest examples of which are from vineyards on the slate-rich soils closest to the lake. The wines that are made around Balatonfured are full bodied with a high extract content and high alcohol levels. The wines from Csopak are more reserved with fine scents and delicate flavours.

Csopak City - The Wine Hub of Csopak   

Csopak City is most famous for its wonderful wines. The city is relatively small but filled with charm and takes all who visit back into simpler times. The town has a range of attractions to offer visitors but the most popular are by the far the excellent local wineries where tours and tastings are on offer.

Balatonfured City - The Resort Town of Balatonfured   

Balatonfured is a popular resort town that is located on the northern shores of Lake Balaton. It is considered to be the capital of this region and is also a very popular yachting destination. Other activities in the town include fishing, visiting the Lajos Kossuth well, and exploring the Cozvy cave system.

Jokai Lookout Tower   

The Jokai Lookout Tower is a three-story wooden tower that is located on top of Tamas Hengy which sits at 317 meters above sea level. The tower offers those who climb its panoramic views of Lake Balaton, Balatonfured, and the Tihanyi Felsziget. The tower can be reached by following the path from the Loczy Caves.

Explore the Loczy Cave

The Loczy Caves are a highly protected cave network just a 30 minutes walk outside of Balatonfured. The caves can be reached by following the green blaze from the local train station. Once inside there is electric lighting so that the entire cave system can be seen. Guided tours are offered to all visitors and the duration of the tour is 30 minutes.

The landscape of Balatonfured – Csopak is dominated by the magnificent and breath taking Lake Balaton. The lake provides a wealth of activities for water lovers and the most beautiful scenery for all who visit. Balaton Felvideki National Park - The Balaton Uplands National Park           

The Balaton Uplands National Park was declared a protected area in 1997 and covers 56 997 ha of land, divided into 6 protected areas. These areas are the Tihany Peninsula, the Pecselyi Basin, the Kali Bason, the Tapolca Basin, the Keszthely Mountains and the Kis Balaton. The national park is a wonderful place for nature lovers to visit and offers a range of activities including hiking, canoeing and walking. The park has a number of visitor centers offering information and guided tours for those looking for a more formal tour. For visitors who would like to extend their stay, the park has a range of accommodation facilities to cater to all types of tourists.

Koloska Valley      

The Koloska Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in Balatonfured – Csopak and is best known for the Koloska Rock. The valley ca be explored by marked tourist paths and takes visitors through winding routes passed some of the most beautiful scenes in Hungary.

Vadas Park - The Game Park of the Koloska Valley              

Vadas Park is a fenced game park inside the Koloska Valley. Inside the park, visitors can watch many species of birds and deer while enjoying a short walk. There are also various lookout towers that one can climb to enjoy the surrounding views. The park is located next to the Koloska Stream which provides beautiful landscapes and magical sceneries.

Kremes - A Mouthwatering Creamy Dessert

Kremes are a delicious creamy dessert that is made with two layers of puff pastry that are held together with a generous helping of smooth pastry cream. Over time the recipe has become modernized, but the basic thing that remains is that the pastry cream should be light and fluffy, and the tops should be dusted with powdered sugar. When served, Kremes are cut into large rectangular-shaped slices. This wonderful dessert can be found at any pastry shop across Eger.

Balaton Style Fish Soup - The Soup of Lake Balaton

Balaton style fish soup is made with many different kinds of fish including carp, catfish, crucian carp, seabream and brown bullhead. The different kinds of fish are cooked together with red and green paprika, potatoes, onion and garlic to make a wonderful soup packed with local flavours.

Zander is one of the best-tasting fish that are caught in Lake Balaton. The best way to enjoy the fish is when it is roasted. Once the fish is perfectly roasted, it is often served with a red and sweet pepper cream sauce and sauerkraut.
