Wide range and diverse wines from Herzegovina
The wine making region of Herzegovina has a Mediterranean climate with summer temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius. The soil of the region is dry and stony, and the landscape is mainly made of karst. For this reason, drought is an ever-present challenge for wine makers.
The main treasure of Herzegovina is the Zilavka white grape. The name of the grape means strong roots because its roots run so deep that it can cope with the lack of water in a drought and in soaring temperatures. The region is also known for the growth of Blatina, but this is far more difficult than only the female flowers.
Grape Varieties:
Red: Blatina, Trnjak, Vranac, Plavac Mali, Kambuša, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot
White: Zilavka, Bena, Chardonnay, Krkosija
What are the Herzegovina wines like
Of the red wines made in Herzegovina, there are two main types. The first type are light wines with aromas of berries. These wines have a gentle tannin structure. The second type of red wine is deep with a dark red colour. These red wines are very bright with lively acidity and softer tannins.
The white wines of Herzegovina are fresh and light with soft floral aromas, peach notes and an excellent texture and body. These wines are often used to make the more complex orange wines of the region.
