The Luís Pato- Wines expressing the Unique Bairrada Terroir
The Luís Pato winery is located in the city of Bairrada in Portugal. The monovarietal and single-vineyard wines at Luís Pato express the unique Bairrada terroir. The winery family has been producing wine at Quinta do Ribeirinho since the eighteen century.
Story of the Winegrower
João Pato started to bottle the wine from his vineyards in 1970, becoming the first winegrower in the Bairrada region after its demarcation. His son Luis Pato inherited this nonconformist and pioneer spirit and in 1980 produced his first wine, a pure Baga from exceptional quality and absolute rareness that is sought by appreciators as a treasure. In 1988 he planted Baga from ungrafted vines to understand pre-phylloxera wines and produces the first Vinhas Velhas’ wine from Portugal. And in 1995, he produced wines from a single vineyard: Vinha Pan, Vinha Barrosa, and Quinta do Ribeirinho Pé Franco.
Vineyards and Wine varieties
In 2005, he made his first wine with his daughter Filipa, the FLP, using the cryo-extraction method. He also created the Informal and Quinta do Moinho, white sparkling wines from Baga grape harvested from the first picking of a single vineyard. Then in 2011, Fernão Pires, the first red from white grape, with 94% Maria Gomes and 6% Baga’s skins was made.
The 60 hectares of vineyards of the winery are planted with Baga and Touriga Nacional which are red varieties as well as Maria Gomes, Bical, Bairrada’s Cercial, and Sercialinho which are white. The vineyards are distributed in two different types of soil: sandy and chalky-clay. Red, white, rose, sparkling and dessert wines are made from these grapes.
The wines are produced under DOC Bairrada labels.
