Usiglian del Vescovo: dispute between bishops gave the winery its name

In the Toscana region of Italy, lies the famous winery Usiglian del Vescovo. It is situated near Palaia, in the rolling hills of Valdera. The history of the winery’s name is rather interesting as it owes its name to the fact that it was a subject of dispute which arose in the 11th century between the Bishops of Pisa and Luca.

The Bishop of Luca had the ownership of Palaia while the other was assigned with the fief of Usigliano. The castle of the same name which was a cluster of dwellings and plots of land dates back to that time. Usigliano maintained its identity as a small agricultural hamlet for over 10 centuries. It had a small population of about 200. But now, Usigliano has been depopulated since these past few decades.

Today the winery extends over almost 160 hectares, of which 22 are planted with vines, and 10 with olive trees

The Villa Usigliano, the manor from which the surrounding farms and houses were administered stands in the centre of the winery. The Usigliano vineyards take their name from the same.

Planted on marine fossils originating in the Pliocene era

The Usigliano vineyards are planted on land rich in marine fossils originating in the Pliocene era with the formation of a coastal plain and varying from sandy silt to medium texture. This exposure to the fossils provides the vineyards with a favourable microclimate for viticulture, with regular rainfall, constant breeze and hot summers with cooler nights. Thus, high quality wines are produced under different labels such as IGT, DOC Terre di Pisa, and Chianti Superiore Docg.
