Albert Seltz in the Young and Old Alsace Region Before the 13th century, there were around 100 wine villages in the region, which were uprooted later because of famines and the 30 Years War. Alsace belonged to the Germans at first and later on became French. The region was divided into departments after the French Revolution, and vineyards almost doubled. The quality rules for the Grand Crus were defined in 1971, and the first Grand Cru was adopted in1975. The company had its first Grand Cru Sylvaner in 2005.
