Yesterday we went to visit the Quinta Casal Sta Maria winery in Colares. We were welcomed by the company representative, Mr Carlos, who was very attentive and courteous, providing everyone with a happy Sunday and that is why I recommend this tour.

A beautiful winery above in the mountains of Lisbon is Casal Santa Maria. The young winemaker knows stories about ancestors and the history of the origins of the winery. The beautiful estate surrounded by vines makes the trip. Rose, white and of course red wines of the middle class are produced here.

Very beautiful area. Too bad it was raining. The family history is very moving. Loucas' explanations are very clear. We can feel that he is passionate. We really enjoyed this visit.

Got there with no reservations, but we were super well hosted, tasted some wine, learned about the rich history of the place and its wine. We walked around after the staff showed us where to go and what to see on our own, with a glass in hand. The barrels and wine making areas are only showed in booked tours but having no expectations , it didn’t bother us at all, after all they don’t have infinite staff to show people the massive estate all the time. There is a gate and parking too :)

We showed up with no appointment but Lucas was absolutely charming and professional. The four of us had an awesome tasting with a complete history of the winery and the founder - which is very interesting. The wines vary in quality but are priced appropriately. Lucas was very knowledgeable about the wines and the wine making. He gave us a tour of the grounds and the cellars. While the winery has a deep appreciation of the history of wine making in the region they also use modern equipment and techniques. We ended up purchasing several half bottles of the Colares Ramisco as well as the Sauvignon Blanc and even a Rose.

It is extraordinary how someone, at an age that many would consider to be at the end of his life ("It was in 2006 and I was 96 years old at the time, when I woke up from surgery with the idea of making wine..."), comes here to launch this magnificent work, to create a unique vineyard, not falling into the error of thinking that everything that is made here is Colares wine, but making distinct wines, with a different flavor and aroma because here there are mists and sea breezes that also contaminate the vines. Great Baron Bodo von Bruemmer, thank you for what you did for this land.

An impeccable visit. Very well documented and interesting. Lucas made it enjoyable and fun. They don't just show you what they show you in all the wineries, but they also take you on a tour of all the vineyards, telling the story (very interesting by the way) of the same. The tasting is of 6 wines and they are super different and spectacular.
