Located in the Capital city of Australia, the Canberra wine region covers the northern part of the city of Canberra. The region encompasses the towns of Bungendore, Murrumbateman, and Yass of New south wales. The region is triangular in shape with each side around 60km and is a part of the Southern Tablelands, 150km from the coastline connected to the Pacific Ocean. Canberra wine district is divided into 3 sub-regions- Yass, Murumbateman, and Bungendore. The region lies east of Gundagai, southeast of Hilltops, southwest of Southern Highlands, and northeast of the Tumbarumba region.
The first vines were planted in the late 1840s, according to legend. The Canberra district's wine industry fell in the late nineteenth century due to an economic crisis and Phylloxera infestation, which took nearly a century to re-emerge. Scientists conducted a survey of the region in the 1970s, meticulously researching the vineyards, grapes, and procedures to use. The vines were planted in modest numbers, with the goal of expressing the actual nature of the region. In February 1998, the Canberra district wine region was granted its own wine-specific Geographical designation.
During the summer, the Canberra district wine area enjoys an intense continental climate with hot and dry days and cool nights. The district is known for its cold weather, however, it is surrounded by temperature differences, with higher elevations near Bungendore, the highest point at 1419 meters above sea level, and lower altitudes near Yass, at 264 meters above sea level. The vineyards receive optimal rainfall during the autumn season, ensuring great grape growth. The average annual temperature is roughly 21 degrees Celsius, and the average annual rainfall is 420mm. The majority of the soils are hard red duplexes with shallow clay loam top layers. Canberra wines are divided into two categories: chilly climate wines from higher altitudes and fruitier wines from lower altitudes.
The top grape varieties grown in the Canberra district wine region are Riesling and Shiraz. Aside from these two signature varietals, the region also produces excellent Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Tempranillo, Pinot Gris, and Merlot. Lake Burley Griffin is a man-made water reservoir located in the heart of Canberra, Australia. Telstra Tower which is also known as Black Mountain tower is a telecom tower above the Black mountain overlooking the Australian capital city of Canberra. The tower is named after the biggest telecom company, Telstra Corporation. The tower rises 195.2 meters above the peak of the mountain and is now an important landmark in Canberra which offers panoramic views of the city.
