Contentious Character is a contemporary estate with winery, cellar door and restaurant tucked away in the hills of Wamboin, 15 minutes from Canberra Airport. As a boutique vineyard and producer, wines span across their Founders Museum Collection of Old World style vintages to more recent vintages with fresh New World World twists. The restaurant serves seasonal, locally sourced and prepared food ( and countryside views). The menu is a blend of Italian and Australian cuisine, designed to perfectly compliment our cool climate wines.
Contrast is at the heart of the Contentious Character winery. Located in hilly area, few miles away from the Canberra city, the vineyards benefits from the elevation and relishes the cool air and abundance of sun to produce fine grapes. The cool climate vineyard gives unique character to the grapes. The wines made from these grapes have contrasting taste than other wines produced in Australia. The Contentious Character winemakers believe that everyone should get involved in a dialogue over a glass of wine or more. They believe contrasting views makes for an interesting conversation. The Contentious Character winemaking team is as diverse as they come, keeping up with their maxim of bringing contrast. Although Contentious but the winery is highly hospitable. They take pride in showing good times to their visitors. They vineyard is located against the backdrop of rolling hills and views of mountains covered in snow.

Write a reviewWe celebrated an 18th and it was generally excellent: from the food to the wine to the service. Will definitely recommend and would be happy to come back. The only minor inconvenience that I feel needs to be mentioned was that the courtyard needs a better shade system, like a full awning, as the umbrella's just left gaps letting the sun bake areas on the table, making them unusable (they were scorching).

Awesome experience. We had the Indulgence Package with Elements pairing. The wine and food were delicious, and host was very knowledgeable and happy to tailor the experience to our needs and preferences as well as providing advice and sharing his knowledge. In addition to 12 tastings and pairings, I chose to bring 2 extra bottles home. Look forward to coming back and trying more.

Everything was wonderful. The hostess polite and friendly. Our server was helpful and said that she would give us a heads up if we were ordering too much. We went ala carte and I am glad we did. There were three of us, and we debated long on whether the lamb or the beef were the highlight. Think it is a tie. Wine excellent and the garden margarita worth a try.

We had an excellent lunch here. The staff were very accomodating for dietary restrictions. The beef tartare was a real stand out and the wine pairings with different cheeseboard items were really cool. The wines were nice, no real stand outs for us but we have been spoilt for choice with different wines across Australia. We bought a trio gin pack we are looking forward to trying.

Dined yesterday at the new location in Dairy Road. Having been to the wamboin location in the past it was hard to compare the two! Such a different vibe but a fantastic one that compliments the brand as well. The entrees were great, the main was great and the full Monty wine tasting was excellent. Staff food and atmosphere all great. Recommend 🙏
