The Colloca Estate Winery

Even if they are located in the northernmost part of New York State’s Finger Lakes Region, they are not necessarily identified as a “Finger Lakes Winery”. Because Colloca Estate Winery is located on the North Coast of America – along the southern shores of the Great Lake Ontario — they’re just outside of the American Viticultural Association’s (AVA) geographic designation for the region. Due to their unique location, they enjoy the same microclimate as the rest of the finger lakes region, but on a much grander scale due to their placement on the shore of the lake. The site was chosen by Dr. Christopher Colloca to develop the Lake Effect Vineyard® not just because of the very special microclimate, but like the rest of the Finger Lakes Region, it enjoys the nutrients the rich soil provided by the glaciers that carved out the region supply to nurture their growth.

So What’s Done Differntly?

The vines originate from Europe and are grafted onto the Native American rootstock using the finest viticultural practices and laser planted in the Lake Effect Vineyard to grow the wine grapes. To make the best wines, they are concentrated on a few varietals that grow well in cool climates such as Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. The fruits are left to hang on the vines for a few more weeks than usual to let the lake climate do its magic developing character, intensity, flavors, and fully ripen.

Beautiful scenery, ambience and exquisite wine! We fell in love with this place even with the storm that was passing through.

We decided to take a day trip from Syracuse to have lunch at Colloca Estate Winery and a hike at Fair Haven State Park. It wasn't busy in the outdoor dining area when we arrived at about 12:15 on a Thrusday, although several additional couples trickled in after we arrived. The pulled pork sandwich was very good. The Sililian sandwich also was very good and was huge. The Sicilian Tomato Potato Salad side sounded interesting but was disappointing (we both got that side and neither of us liked it or finished It). Counter service was friendly and prompt (we were the only ones ordering at the time) and our food came out in about 10-15 minutes. You have to go to the bar at the other end of the seating area to get wine. We were in the mood for a Reiling but they were out of 2 of the 3 Rieslings on the menu. We ordered the available Riesling - it was good, but the bottle price seemed a bit high for us. We'd return of we were in the area. Edited to add: We were taken aback by the "response from the owner". Seriously - we're at a winery, not a high end restaurant (at best it’s an outdoor cafeteria). Tacking on an additional $5 depending on where at the winery you buy the wine is, well, tacky. And chiding your customers because they don't want to spend $25 on a bottle of wine is arrogant and not the way to win or keep customers. Guess we won't be back after all.

We went here to see the total eclipse and it was fantastic. If I didn't know any better, I'd think they had eclipse viewing events every week. The whole thing was so well organized (parking, food, music, vendors, themed souvenirs), it was truly a joy. They had plenty of bathrooms to accommodate the large groups. Everyone on staff that we encountered was friendly and great at their job. Kudos to Colloca, we'll be talking about it for years to come. And next time we're in the area, we'll stop by again.

I stopped in here on a Saturday with a small group of people to enjoy the views and the good wine. We made a reservation for a table, which was a good idea considering how busy they were! We were seated quickly and brought menus of their food and wine/cider options. They had a big assortment and offered flights of wine as well as cider or beer which was great. Our waitress was funny and checked on us frequently and also knowledgeable about the food they served. We got a pear pizza and some calamari for the table, you are also still currently required to order food. Overall I found it a little expensive for what you got, but it was beautiful inside and tasty. I'd just keep in mind that you're paying for the atmosphere. I'd recommend a stop in!
