Saxenburg Estates – a Winery with History Dating Back to 1693 Saxenburg Estates Winery has been operating since 1693 when Governor Simon Van Der Stel granted the land to a man from Sweden, Joachim Sax. In 1705 the farm became the property of Oloff and Albertus Bergh, also from Sweden, and the name Saxenburg developed from these early winemaking pioneers. In 1707, records show that the first vines were planted. The farm went from being a grape growing farm to a mine as a result of the natural resources in the ground. Predominantly granite and zinc were found, and as a result, …
