It’s all about the slate, the dark-colored mineral rich soil in which the Rielsing vines grow here. It is a keystone character of the winery’s terroir and helps explain why the Riesling here attains a varietally pure, intense and mouth-gripping presence and freshness. The Rieslign comes in many forms, as the winery fields both estate and village wines from their traditional vineyards exhibiting a rich mix of soil characters, as well as their top-end single estate Rieslings, coming from the Erdener Treppchen and the Erdener Prälat plots. These are the very steepest vineyards sites with over 100-year old vines growing deep into the mountain.
