Wine tasting and food

Anton was very knowledgable and we loved the very personalised tour. He selected the wines and gave us cheeses and jams. The orange jam is to die for! Definitely worth going off the beaten track and visit this gem in the Douro Valley!

A very special, different winery visit off the beaten path

Our visit to the Kranemann Quinta do Convento winery was just fantastic. It is located quite far from the typical wineries you visit in the Douro valley, but it was worth the extra 30 minute drive. The place, quite high on the mountain, is a former monastery with centuries-long tradition of wine-making. The brand itself is quite new, but the place itself has history all over it, with fabulous views over the river and the valley. Our host Alessandra was very friendly and knowledeable about the wines. As this was our first visit to a port winery, she explained us the basics of the portwine like the vinification process, difference between Ruby and Tawny, colheita and vintage wines, etc. in very simple, but clear words so that even a person who is not so experienced in wines could easily understand. The tasting was very nice, in a beautiful outdoor setting, with 3 still and 2 port (Ruby and Tawny) wines to taste. The wines were excellent and we bought a few to take home. The hospitality we received at the Kranemann winery was exceptional, very warm and personal. I highly recommend visiting this place, on an unbeaten path, away from the tourist crowds - this will definitely be the highlight of your Douro valley trip.

Thanks Andrey!

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Kranemann Wine Estates. It’s great to know that the extra 30-minute drive was worth it for you and that you appreciated the stunning views and rich history of our location. I’m glad I could make the complexities of port wine easy to understand and that you enjoyed the outdoor tasting experience with both still and port wines. Your kind words about our hospitality mean a lot to us. I highly recommend this unique and less crowded spot in the Douro valley – it truly is a highlight for many visitors. Thank you again for your visit and your lovely review!

They have now been open to the public for 2 months and bookings are essential as the staff who do tours and provide information on the wines in multiple languages are still doing other jobs within the winery and the broader organisation. As a Sommelier I was interested in the way this new endeavour for the overall Kraneman Estate has developed in terms of table wines and more specifically its red wines. The entry level Hasso was very approachable and balanced and would be best suited to those just beginning their red wine journey. The current 2020 vintage of red blend was the best of the bunch for drink now reds, while the 2018 Reserve and the single varietal Tinta Barroca will both be better if left to age for another 5+ years in the bottle. The grounds and the building have been amazingly restored and the possibilities for this site are almost endless. My only negative for the whole experience was that it was a long way from anywhere else and a real effort to find and the cost of the tasting was not quite on point (significantly more) when compared to similar experiences in Portugal and the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.
