A Fascinating Story That is Part of the Douro

Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias is a historic gem nestled in the Távora Valley of Portugal. This estate has played a vital role in the Douro Valley's winemaking history since the 12th century when Cistercian monks first cultivated the land. As one of the oldest wine producers in the region, the Quinta is renowned for its exceptional Port and DOC Douro wines. In 2018, it became part of Kranemann Wine Estates, marking the beginning of an exciting wine and tourism initiative in this unique area of the Douro.

The Unique Terroir of Kranemann Wine Estates' Vineyards

The vineyards of Kranemann Wine Estates are located in the picturesque Vale do Rio Távora, where the north and northeast-facing slopes rise between 320 and 420 meters above sea level. This elevation allows the vines to thrive in cooler temperatures, resulting in wines that are both fresh and elegant. The combination of schist and granite soils further enhances the character of our wines, providing the body and complexity necessary for aging. With these unique conditions, Kranemann Wine Estates produces wines that reflect the true essence of the Douro Valley.

They have now been open to the public for 2 months and bookings are essential as the staff who do tours and provide information on the wines in multiple languages are still doing other jobs within the winery and the broader organisation. As a Sommelier I was interested in the way this new endeavour for the overall Kraneman Estate has developed in terms of table wines and more specifically its red wines. The entry level Hasso was very approachable and balanced and would be best suited to those just beginning their red wine journey. The current 2020 vintage of red blend was the best of the bunch for drink now reds, while the 2018 Reserve and the single varietal Tinta Barroca will both be better if left to age for another 5+ years in the bottle. The grounds and the building have been amazingly restored and the possibilities for this site are almost endless. My only negative for the whole experience was that it was a long way from anywhere else and a real effort to find and the cost of the tasting was not quite on point (significantly more) when compared to similar experiences in Portugal and the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.
