Alves de Sousa Winery has been making wines in the Douro Valley for five generations. The quality and singularity of the wines are widely recognized. Among the numerous distinctions of the winery is the Producer of the Year award presented in 1999 and again in 2006 by the most famous Portuguese Wine Magazine (Revista de Vinhos). Alves de Sousa Winery is the first winery in history to receive this prestigious distinction for Portuguese wine producers twice.

Tiago Alves de Sousa and Winemaker of the Year Awards
Tiago Alves de Sousa is awarded the National Winemaker Award Prize awarded unanimously by the Chancellery of the Honorary Order of Santa Maria de Ossónoba. This distinction joins the nominations for the “Winemaker of the Year” awards by the magazine “Wine – The Essence of Wine” and “Enólogo Geração XXI” by the magazine “Passion for Wine,” thus also accumulating nominations in two of the major publications.
Main Types of Grapes that Grow at the Winery
The temperature, rainfall, and soils are perfect in the Douro region for vines’ growth and cultivation. The main types of grapes that grow here are Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Roriz. The best grapes produce their unique red, white, rosé, dessert, and fortified wines. The new wine cellar at Alves de Sousa, located in the prestigious Quinta da Gaivosa combines tradition and modernity, having been awarded several Architecture and Wine Tourism awards, including the “Best of Wine Tourism 2017”. Their wines have a great taste and showcase the qualities of their gifted terroir.
