Douro Valley Winery

All wines at Cálem are crafted from grapes grown in the Douro Valley, where the climate and soil create ideal conditions for viticulture. The primary grape variety here is Touriga Nacional, known for producing exquisite Port and other wines. Cálem honors traditional Port Wine practices while integrating modern technology to create exceptional wines that reflect the region's heritage.

Engaging Wine Activities

At Cálem, guests can learn more about the Douro region and Port Wine through an interactive museum. This educational experience covers everything from the soil and grape varieties to the different wine categories and their aromas. Visitors can tour the cellars, observe the vats and barrels, and gain insights into the production process and the storied history of this iconic winery. To enhance the experience, live Fado performances accompany wine tastings, providing a true taste of Portuguese culture.

We did the €20 tour and two glass Classic option. The tour was very good with lots of interesting information and you get to see the oak vats and kegs. Nice tasting port in cool tasting room. Don’t steal the tasting glasses you can buy them for €3 on the way out!

We took a tour with a tasting of three port wines. We were informed that port wine has little to do with Porto, as the port wine cellars are located in Gaia, not Porto. And the wine used for port wine comes from the Douro Valley. Nevertheless, it was a very nice little museum with a good tour past the huge port wine barrels to the tasting room. Unfortunately, we couldn't extend our tasting and try another rosé.

An extraordinary experience. We took the guided tour in French. Our guide was truly amazing! You could tell he loved his job, and he taught us a lot about port. A tasting followed, a very enjoyable, friendly experience. It was the best place we visited in Porto.

A great tour through the wine cellars followed by a tasting. Thanks to Carla for the informative tour. Overall, it was a very informative tour and very interesting to watch. I highly recommend this tour if you're visiting Porto. It was a bit distracting to hear other groups talking alongside your group, as it was easy to get distracted or the noise quickly became loud, making it difficult to understand the guide.

A very beautiful and classic winery. I recommend the premium tasting of three wines. You'll get a very good idea of the different Port wine varieties. The guide was very friendly and explained everything well, but perhaps a little too quickly.

Visiting Cálem Port Wine Cellars is a fantastic experience for wine lovers and anyone interested in Porto’s rich wine heritage. Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, this renowned wine cellar offers excellent guided tours that walk you through the history, production, and aging process of Port wine. The tour is engaging and well-organized, with a perfect balance of education and entertainment. The highlight, of course, is the wine tasting, where you get to sample different styles of Cálem’s famous Ports in a cozy and elegant setting. Some tours also include a fado music performance, which adds a unique cultural touch to the experience. With a great location by the Douro River, it’s easy to combine this visit with a walk along the waterfront or stops at other wine cellars. Highly recommended for a true taste of Porto!
