The Origin of the Estate of Château de l'Estang

Château de l'Estang boasts a rich history that dates back to the 18th century when it began as a modest farm, still visible at the entrance of the estate. By the 19th century, the property had transformed under the ownership of a prominent figure who constructed a manor equipped with rifles and cannons. Unfortunately, this structure was destroyed in battle, along with a nearby castle, leaving only fragments of the wall as a testament to its past. A well-preserved statue of the Virgin, erected in 1891, stands near the parking lot, symbolizing the estate's storied legacy.

The subsequent owner built the current château atop a hill, surrounded by lush vineyards and a serene forest, complemented by two natural springs. This picturesque setting fosters a vibrant cultural atmosphere, making it a unique destination for wine enthusiasts.

Château de l'Estang in the 1990s

In the spring of 1990, Mr. Schouartz, a successful builder, landed his helicopter on the castle lawn and was captivated by the estate's beauty. He envisioned creating a premier wine estate in Castillon and, after surveying the property from above, expressed his desire to acquire it. Although initially reluctant to sell, Mr. Filliol ultimately passed the estate to Mr. Schouartz, who invested 10 million francs to construct a modern wine cellar and equip it with state-of-the-art technology for producing exceptional wines.

In 1993, Mr. Bocquillon, hailing from a noble Parisian family, purchased the château. Under his stewardship, the quality of the wine has consistently improved, earning the estate numerous accolades in prestigious wine competitions.

We have been sleeping in a hotel room for two nights now in order to be present at a wedding that is taking place downstairs. The owners of the land are charming, and have a huge garden that they rent out with the marquees.

A beautiful building in a magnificent setting! 360° views of the vineyards. A very nice place to stay in the summer. The rooms are a good size and have a bathroom. However, the living room is too small for the capacity (approximately 20 people), and the dining room is poorly soundproofed.
