Experience Organic Farming and Natural Viticulture in Bordeaux
Organic Vineyard & Farm in Bordeaux, France
At Château Shuette, we began crafting our wines in 2020, taking over full production in December 2022. Today, we proudly operate as a sustainable, natural vineyard and organic farm in Bordeaux, France. With less than 0.0024% of Bordeaux vineyards producing natural wine, we are committed to showcasing that diversified, organic, and regenerative agriculture can thrive in this renowned region.
Sustainable Practices and Biodiversity at the Vineyard
Our vineyard and surrounding land have been organic for nearly 30 years. Spanning 12 hectares, we prioritize environmental health and biodiversity. Over 250 fruit trees, including plum, cherry, and apple, provide essential habitats for local wildlife. We have installed more than 280 bird, bat, and owl boxes to support a diverse range of species. Our waterways, animal highways, hedgerows, and wild borders create safe, uncultivated habitats for various animals.
We carefully select cover crops and wildflowers to enhance biodiversity, build soil health, and capture carbon and nitrogen, eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers. By allowing plants to complete their life cycles before cutting, we promote the growth of subsequent plant generations. Our property also provides a habitat for larger wildlife, including deer, wild boar, and rabbits. Additionally, we maintain a small flock of ducks, geese, and chickens that roam freely among the vines, helping to manage insect populations and naturally fertilize the land.
The Vineyard:
Our 4.5-hectare vineyard is located next to the Dordogne River, benefiting from deep clay and mineral schist deposits. We produce approximately 16,000 bottles of wine each year and have an additional 6 hectares of organic pasture that we plan to develop into a regenerative farm in the coming years.
We grow:
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Noir, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and newly planted Malbec.
Our vine management involves trimming to two growing vines with four shoots per side, which reduces overall fruit production to enhance quality. All vineyard work is performed by hand, ensuring meticulous care for each vine.
Cultivation:
We strive to improve the land's condition each year by employing a blend of permaculture and regenerative agriculture practices. Our cultivation and harvest processes are entirely manual.
Our wine:
We do not categorize our wines into tiers. Each wine is crafted with the utmost care, utilizing the best techniques and materials to highlight its unique characteristics. Our goal is to create a spectrum of wines that showcase distinct styles and expressions.
