Quinta Da Furada

Quinta Da Furada has been a cherished family estate for over seven generations. The current owners are the great-grandchildren of Valério Augusto de Sousa, who welcomed his first son in the estate's historic house in 1919. The winery was established in 1888 when Valério inherited the land, which includes vineyards and olive groves. He expanded the estate by acquiring 24 additional plots from neighboring owners, ensuring that Quinta Da Furada remains a unified and storied place filled with rich flavors and traditions.

The Story of Furada

The name “Furada” is derived from the ancient holes and excavations found in the soil, believed to be remnants of Roman mining for precious metals. The winery holds a belief that the true value of Quinta emerges from the earth each year, with its grapes and olives serving as the foundation for the renowned Pata D’Urso wines and exquisite Furada olive oil.

The Secret of the Unique Wines

At Quinta Da Furada, traditional winemaking techniques are honored. The presses, crafted from schist and granite, are used for the artisanal production of both table and port wines. Grapes are crushed by foot, a method that enhances the maceration process, requiring dedication and skill. This technique leaves a distinct mark on the wine's character.
The initial stage, known as “cutting,” involves crushing the grapes to separate the juice from the skins. This is followed by the “freedom” phase, where the treader ensures the grape skins remain submerged in the wine. After a few hours, fermentation begins, releasing vibrant colors, tannins, and aromas. This time-honored method, preserved at Furada, is the foundation of our exceptional wines.

We went to Quinta da Furada with a group of wine marketing students and our visit was quite impressive. We learned not just about wine making and grape variaties but also about cork trees, olives, the history of the family and region and tasted some great wines. The highlight was our little offroad tour through the vineyards and sunset looking over the Duoro valley. Thanks you for this experience!

We had an amazing afternoon at Quinta da Furada. Duarte took us on a walk through the vineyards, followed by an extensive tasting. The family wine is impressive. And the personal tour, the explanation by Duarte and the help of his daughters made our experience in the Douro a very special one. We will make sure to come back to this wonderful place. Thank you!
