A Family Winery with a Rich Heritage in Portugal
Quinta Do Monte Travesso History
Quinta do Monte Travesso is a family-owned winery and olive oil producer located in the picturesque Porto & Douro region of Portugal. The winery's history dates back to 1896 when it was first mentioned by the Viscount of Vilarinho de São Romão in his book ‘Viticultura e Vinicultura’. Since then, it has remained in the same family, beginning with Arthur de Magalhães Pinto Ribeiro. Over the years, the estate has been passed down through generations, with third-generation winemaker Joseph Emmanuel enhancing its legacy. Today, Bernardo Maria oversees the production of both wine and olive oil, while also promoting wine tourism to share the Quinta's rich history and exceptional wines with visitors.
Vines for Exceptional Wines
The vineyards at Quinta do Monte Travesso span over 16 hectares across a stunning valley. The region's poor, schistose soils are ideal for cultivating premium red grape varieties, including Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Sousão. For white wines, the estate grows Cerceal, Fernão Pires, Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, and Rabigato. To maintain the quality of the oldest vineyards, all vineyard work is performed manually, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural growth of the vines. In newer vineyards, careful selection of grapevine material and meticulous training techniques are employed to promote healthy growth and optimal grape quality.
