Located in the vibrant heart of Porto’s Marquês neighborhood, theLAB Porto is far from your traditional wine cellar. It is a dedicated "flavor playground" and cultural hub focused on the revival of traditional, sustainable, and low-intervention winemaking in Portugal. Founded by Ryan Opaz—renowned wine expert and co-author of Foot-Trodden: Portugal and the Wines That Time Forgot—theLAB serves as a bridge between small-scale independent producers and curious wine lovers.

At theLAB, the philosophy is simple: Flavor First. We don’t believe in points or complex tasting notes; we believe in the stories behind the bottle. Every wine we showcase carries a piece of history, culture, and the soul of the person who made it.

Platform Content / About Us

Our Story & Mission: theLAB Porto was born from a passion for preserving the "forgotten" vineyards of Portugal. Our mission is to inspire exploration through flavor while actively supporting local communities and ecosystems. We specialize in natural, organic, and biodynamic wines that represent the true diversity of Portuguese terroir—from the Atlantic-influenced whites of the coast to the rugged, old-vine field blends of the interior.

The Experience: A visit to theLAB is an educational journey. Unlike the crowded, commercial lodges across the river, we offer an intimate, boutique environment where you can engage in "tailored conversations" rather than scripted tours.

What We Offer:

  • On-Demand Private Tastings: Bespoke 90-minute explorations led by experts like Ryan Opaz or Store Manager Mike Shubbuck. These sessions deep-dive into Portugal’s rich viticultural history, featuring hand-picked low-intervention wines.
  • Sensory Pairings: Our tastings are elevated with artisanal specialty cheeses and crackers, carefully selected to complement the unique profiles of natural wines.
  • A Sustainable Hub: Beyond wine, we host producer talks, masterclasses on vermouth and bitters, and cultural events—all within a space dedicated to social and environmental sustainability.
  • Rare Finds: Our curated shop features rare bottles, orange wines, and traditional talha (clay pot) wines that are difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

Interesting shop with a variety of organic and quality wines, as well as other products. We didn't buy anything, but we'll be back to do so.

Wow! What an incredible spot. We spent about half an hour with Mike yesterday learning about Portugal wines. He was super helpful in not only educating us but in assisting with picking out the perfect bottle to suit our tastes. We were blown away by the selection of orange and amphora wines! One of our favorite stops in Portugal and run by good people. A must visit!

We had a private tasting with Mike, the manager, and it was amazing!!! He is extremely knowledgeable about Portuguese wines and taught us so much. Coming from the US, we didn't know anything about Portuguese wines, and we left feeling like we had tasted a lovely variety of them and knew what to order the rest of our trip throughout the country because of Mike's guidance. The shop itself is beautifully laid out and very cozy, the pricing is competitive, and it has great ambiance. Not to mention, he made ordering wine to send home to the US extremely easy. 5 stars!!

Great wine shop in Porto selling lots of natural wine sourced from around Portugal, and special old bottles, as well as olive oil and other wine related merchandise. They also host regular wine based programs aimed at educating and bringing people together. If you're looking for that hard to find birth year wine or spirit, look them up. A real treat!

theLAB is a gem in the Marquês neighborhood! I’ve been going there for years, and there’s so much to like about this “flavor playground.” They often hold producer tastings, introductory and master classes, and special events that are a steal of a deal for the info they share and range of tastings of wine, port, vermouth, amaro, or whatever they’re pouring. I love that they’re serious about sustainability and supporting small Portuguese producers. As a result, they’ve got a great selection of wine that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (and they can do special orders). Ryan and Mike love to share their deep knowledge of everything on their shelves, and they introduced me to vermouths from France that I’m particularly into right now. If you haven’t ventured outside of grocery store wine, give your taste buds a treat by going to theLAB 😋
