We booked a tasting at Weingut Simon Gattinger in Krems through Wine Tourism and it was very enjoyable and educational. The wines were superb, focussing on elegant Grüner Veltliners and expressive Rieslings, and we were treated to a surprise sample of an excellent apricot gin made by Simon’s cousin. The setting could not be more beautiful, with sweeping views over the vineyards and valley, and the tasting room itself is elegant and refined. What sets this experience apart is that it is led by the winemaker himself. His deep knowledge of viticulture and vinification, shared with focus and clarity, makes the visit particularly rewarding for those who already have some understanding of wine. He also kindly recommended a superb restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious dinner afterwards in Durnstein.
Simon created an intimate, interesting, and wonderful experience for us! We accidentally booked the wrong date, and Simon accommodated our mistake and created a wine tasting menu on the spot. You can tell he is passionate and knowledgeable about his craft as a 4th generation wine maker. If you make it to Wachau Valley, Simon must be on your list! Not to mention, the wine collection was light, diverse, and really fun to taste. We ended up buying our favourite bottle.
Very interesting tasting; they explained the different types of grapes grown in the area and how the estates are organized. It was fascinating to understand how they adapt to the terrain’s characteristics to produce very high-quality wines. Thank you for the explanations!
