The Unique Terroir of Loiben
Loiben, situated on the left bank of the Danube, boasts breathtaking high slopes that are ideal for viticulture. The region's challenging terrain has a rich history of winemaking, with the Danube's climate playing a crucial role in shaping the flavors of the wines. The soil, composed of weathered primary rock, gneiss, and loess, contributes to the unique profiles of Loiben's wines, making them a true representation of their origin.
A Legacy of Winemaking
The Gattinger family has a long-standing tradition in viticulture. Simon's great-grandfather, Anton Gattinger, was a passionate winemaker and a founding member of the "Dinstl-Gut" winegrowers' organization in 1930. The family business was later taken over by Simon's grandfather, Leopold, and then by his father, Leo. For two decades, the grapes were sold to esteemed local winemakers until Simon decided to revive the family legacy by producing his own wines in 2017. With the guidance of his parents' experience, Simon continues to honor the family's commitment to quality winemaking.

We arrived late because the booking website we used gave us the wrong address. However Simon, who is the owner and also the host, waited for us and put us in the next slot. Simon was a great host and took his time to explain the difference between each wine. He had 2 groups- us and the group that had a booking for the time we were slotted in. However, he did not seem to rush either group in the tasting. He also answered our questions on grape cultivation in the Wachau region. The atmosphere was great and the bar area was chic and modern. The wines we tasted were mostly riesling and gruner veltliners.

Simon Gattinger can be described with a clear conscience as dynamic, innovative and yet conscious of tradition. His wines enchant the palate with nuanced aromas and an intense bouquet. In just a few years, the young winemaker has developed from a talented insider tip for wine-loving connoisseurs to one of the leading representatives of a new generation of down-to-earth winemakers who have made a demanding profession their calling with sincere dedication. Excellent craftsmanship and a sense of responsibility connected to nature find their rich expression in Simon Gattinger's wines and characterize them with a light and varied note.
