Castilla-La Mancha has a continental Mediterranean climate. The temperatures can be extreme for not benefiting from the influence of the sea: it is very hot in summer, when the temperatures often exceed 30 °C, and very cold in winter when they are often below 0 °C. This being said, it is no surprise that it snows regularly in winter. Therefore, before you decide to visit the wineries in Castilla-La Mancha try to avoid winter and the hot days of summer. It is full of festivals from February to October.
Castilla-La Mancha is a land famous for its unique monuments, and towns, and for being the setting for the adventures of the famous literary hero Don Quixote of La Mancha. Therefore there is no better way to explore the region than following The Don Quixote Route. From Alcalá de Henares to Ciudad Real – Almagro. In between, you will have the chance to take a good taste of Madrid, Toledo, and the magnificent Huécar Gorge and its hanging houses! Although all the towns on this route are linked by bus or train, it's perfect for driving by car or even in a motor home. For art buffs, the life and work of Doménikos Theotokópoulos, the world-famous El Greco is exposed at Toledo. This museum has an extensive collection of paintings by this artist of the Spanish Golden Age.
The most popular white wines, the wineries in Castilla-La Mancha produce, are usually single-varietal, full of fruity aromas, fine and fresh. Macabeo is sometimes blended with Chardonnay to create a light unoaked white wine. As we move towards reds the region produces bold and lush single-varietal or blended red wines with a characteristic note of grilled toast. Tastes of blackberries, leather, and vanilla notes come from oak aging.
Boutique wineries in Castilla-La Mancha offer organized or self-guided educational tours around the winery and the peculiarly shaped vineyards. Walk through a nine-meter deep cave to feel and “listen” to the aging of the wine. Amazing halls and outdoor spaces for the wine tastings, attending the windmills which inspire Miguel de Cervantes. Local cuisine will accompany the wine degustation either as a day-tripper or as a hotel visitor.
Very nice host and great experienceWe had a great time at Fontfroide when we visited the winery. The host was very friendly and we learnt a lot about wines from the region.
