Experience the elegance of Lombardy's Antica Fratta wines
Historical Significance of the Antica Fratta Winery
Located in the picturesque Fratta area of Monticelli Brusati, Antica Fratta winery has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. Originally a farmhouse from the 16th century, it was transformed into a stunning mansion and the center of wine production by Sir Luigi Rossetti, a prominent local merchant. He constructed beautiful wine cellars by excavating the rocky hillside behind the villa, establishing a legacy that would endure for generations.
The Resurrection of 'El Cantinù' and the Villa's Revival
The winery features four tunnels arranged in a Greek cross, capable of holding up to 6,000 hectoliters of wine—an impressive capacity for its time, earning it the local nickname “el cantinù,” meaning ‘the great cellar.’ After Rossetti's passing, the winery fell into decline. However, in the late 1970s, Franco Ziliani, a notable figure in the wine industry and patron of Guido Berlucchi, recognized the potential of the neglected estate. His vision and dedication led to the revival of the villa and its historic cellars, breathing new life into this remarkable winery.
Today, Antica Fratta continues to produce exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Lombardy, inviting wine enthusiasts to appreciate its storied past and exquisite offerings.
