Historical Significance of the Antica Fratta Winery

Located in the picturesque Fratta area of Monticelli Brusati, Antica Fratta winery has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. Originally a farmhouse from the 16th century, it was transformed into a stunning mansion and the center of wine production by Sir Luigi Rossetti, a prominent local merchant. He constructed beautiful wine cellars by excavating the rocky hillside behind the villa, establishing a legacy that would endure for generations.

The Resurrection of 'El Cantinù' and the Villa's Revival

The winery features four tunnels arranged in a Greek cross, capable of holding up to 6,000 hectoliters of wine—an impressive capacity for its time, earning it the local nickname “el cantinù,” meaning ‘the great cellar.’ After Rossetti's passing, the winery fell into decline. However, in the late 1970s, Franco Ziliani, a notable figure in the wine industry and patron of Guido Berlucchi, recognized the potential of the neglected estate. His vision and dedication led to the revival of the villa and its historic cellars, breathing new life into this remarkable winery.

Today, Antica Fratta continues to produce exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Lombardy, inviting wine enthusiasts to appreciate its storied past and exquisite offerings.

Super great property, great hosts. In the early afternoon we were the only customers, so the grandson of the owner family, Andrea, even showed us the cellar. The property was built around 1850. The cellar is magnificent. But of course the sparkling wine is too. Personally, I liked the rosé the best. But try it yourself!

""Perfect"" party for my seventieth birthday in every way. Environment with large bright spaces, impeccable professional staff, a special thanks to Miss Francesca. Wines perfectly paired with all courses. The room where we had lunch, or rather celebrated, was prepared, I must say, exquisitely elegant and refined..... Congratulations, you were truly very good, exceeding any expectations. And I end with a special thank you to chef Mauro of the ""Malo"" restaurant in Rovato and his staff for the menu which was able to understand my needs, and leave everyone surprised and speechless.

On the occasion of the Beetle meeting in Franciacorta, I had the pleasure of visiting the Antica Fratta winery. A very elegant and refined place with well-kept gardens. A tasting of the various wines from the winery was excellently organized. We were given high quality products with the various pearls of the house and you gave us accurate and detailed information on the various phases of the production process. Well done, you gave us a wonderful afternoon and made us dream.

Today we visited this winery. We had an an incredibly informative, welcoming and interesting wine tasting and tour. We tasted 3 wines, the reserve was exceptional. Francesca was engaging, and well versed in subject. She really went the extra step to ensure we were immersed in the experience of not only the winery but the Franciacorta region we are visiting. Highly recommend.
