Artisanal Wines Rooted in Portuguese Tradition
Axe Hill Winery: A Klein Karoo Gem Since 1994
Founded in 1994 by Tony and Lyn Mossop, Axe Hill Winery is nestled on the outskirts of Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo region of South Africa. The winery's name is inspired by ancient stone tools discovered on the estate, hinting at the area's rich history. Known as “The Port Capital of South Africa,” Calitzdorp has a long-standing reputation for producing exceptional fortified wines, making it a vital area for viticulture in the Klein Karoo.
Traditional Winemaking with a Focus on Portuguese Varieties
Since planting their first vineyards in 1994, the Mossops have embraced traditional winemaking techniques. Under the guidance of winemaker Mike Neebe, who took over in 2007, the winery produces wines using methods such as foot treading in open Lagares, a hallmark of Portuguese winemaking. The region's ideal climate and soil conditions allow for the cultivation of high-quality grapes, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, and Souzã, along with a small Grenache vineyard. The grapes are handpicked, lightly crushed, and aged in French oak barrels for two years before bottling.
Award-Winning Cape Vintage Port
Axe Hill Winery gained recognition in 2012 when it won the inaugural Tony Mossop Trophy for Best Cape Vintage Port at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Their first vintage, the 1997 Axe Hill Cape Vintage Port, earned five stars in the John Platter Wine Guide, with six additional wines also receiving this prestigious rating. The winery invites wine enthusiasts to appreciate the quality and character of their wines, set against the stunning backdrop of their estate.
