Unique Wines from the Canary Islands' Volcanic Soil
Bodegas El Sitio is the only winery in the Canary Islands that operates with its own energy supply. Nestled in the Tacoronte municipality of Tenerife, this family-owned winery was established by the González Yanes family. Francisco and his three children set out to create the wines they had always envisioned. In a short span, Bodegas El Sitio gained recognition for its single-varietal wines, celebrated for their minerality derived from the islands' volcanic soils. Their extensive experience in international markets has made these wines highly sought after among fine wine enthusiasts.
Vineyards and Grape Varieties
Bodegas El Sitio cultivates grapes across several unique plots: San Juan, Drinking Fountain, Guarisancho, Las Lapas, and Hoya del Llano. The San Juan plot features red varieties like Vijariego Negro (85%) and Syrah (15%), thriving in clay-loam soil with excellent water retention. The Drinking Fountain plot is renowned for producing the exceptional white variety, El Sitio de Canarias, where silt-loam soil supports the growth of Malvasía Aromática. Guarisancho is home to the Verijadiego Blanco variety, which flourishes in volcanic ash soil, enhancing the grape's fragrance. In Las Lapas, the sandy volcanic soil nurtures Vijariego Negro and Baboso Negro, resulting in concentrated wines. Hoya del Llano is dedicated to the native Forastera Gomera variety, benefiting from the steep slopes and rocky, low-fertility volcanic soil.
Distinctive Wines from Bodegas El Sitio
The Canary Islands are fortunate to have preserved many rare grape varieties due to the absence of phylloxera. This allows for vineyards to be planted without cover, promoting a natural interaction between the plants and the soil. As a result, Bodegas El Sitio wines exhibit a pronounced minerality, enhanced by the unique microclimates of the region. Each wine reflects the distinct characteristics of its variety and terroir, making them truly unique and representative of the Canary Islands' rich viticultural heritage.
