Burmester: A Rich Heritage Since 1750

Founded in 1750, Burmester is a distinguished name in the world of wine, now part of the Sogevinus family. With a commitment to preserving the rich history and tradition of winemaking in the Douro Valley, Burmester has gained international acclaim for its exceptional Port wines. Established by Henry Nash and John Burmester, the winery combines traditional methods with a modern touch, resulting in wines that are both elegant and refined.

Commitment to Sustainability

Burmester is dedicated to sustainable organic viticulture, ensuring that both the vineyards and cellar operate with minimal environmental impact. The winery carefully manages energy consumption and resource use, promoting biodiversity by planting cover crops between vine rows. This practice not only enhances the ecosystem of the Douro region but also protects its unique wildlife. The primary grape variety cultivated here is Touriga Nacional, known for producing high-quality red and white wines.

A Historic Cellar Experience

The winery features a historic cellar that showcases traditional winemaking artifacts, including one of the oldest vats dating back to 1883. Guests can tour the vintage cellar and the aging warehouse, where they can learn about the winemaking process. Additionally, an ancient machinery museum displays tools and equipment used in the past. Visitors are welcome to relax on the terrace, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding landscape while participating in wine tastings and guided tours of the estate.

We booked a tour exclusively in French. Our guide spoke our language very well and gave a lot of details. The tour seemed a little short to us. The Premium tasting is interesting because of the diversity of the 3 wines with the marriage of dark/milk chocolate which increases the flavors tenfold. Our guide Olivia also gave very good advice during the tasting and the choice of our purchases.

Discover the history of the Burmester "brand" of port. A fairly quick tour, it's true, with a tasting at the end. "Tourist" tours (logical), where groups cross paths and follow one another. It still lacks a bit of authenticity...

A highly recommended experience. Port wines are very different from Spanish wines, as I would classify them more as liqueurs or muscatels; but that is subjective. The tasting is perfectly adapted to the time you spend, the cellars are super beautiful and take you back to the origins of the city and in my opinion, a good guide, as was the case in our case, puts the finishing touch to all this. Thank you for the experience and once again a pleasure.

Very friendly little tour, optionally in German, followed by a wine tasting. Absolutely appropriate for the relatively low price, and also pleasant clientele. Large tasting room, which simultaneously presents and sells countless varieties of wine. One of the things that testifies to the German roots of this company is a letter from Konrad Adenauer, which is proudly presented during the tour.

A very enjoyable Port wine tasting tour and the history of Portugal wine. The tour was around 30 minutes and at the end we were taken to a warehouse setup with tables where the tasting takes place. Depending on the ticket purchased you are given either 2 or 3 glasses of Port to taste. I would definitely recommend booking a Port tour. There are lots to choose from and it might be worth booking a package which includes a 24 or 48 hour Porto bus tour.
