A Name Inspired by Nature

Fossil Hills is a charming winery located on Thornvilla Farm in the breathtaking Breede Valley of the Western Cape. This estate showcases the Naudé family's commitment to winemaking, a tradition that began in 1950 and has flourished over three generations. Beyond its role as a wine farm, Fossil Hills offers a serene escape for those looking to relax in nature. The name Fossil Hills comes from the ancient fossils scattered across the property, including the remains of a prehistoric fish that lived 355 million years ago. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of a working wine farm, surrounded by stunning mountain views.

Scenic Surroundings

Situated in the heart of the Breede Valley, between Robertson and McGregor, Fossil Hills is part of the McGregor Winery. The farm cultivates a variety of crops, including grapes, plums, apricots, and vegetables, creating a lush environment. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, a haven for birdwatchers, while fruit orchards, olive groves, and vineyards thrive in the area. For those seeking adventure, the Boesmanskloof hiking trail connects McGregor to Greyton, offering a memorable experience.

Your Gateway to Wine Country

The Breede Valley is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making conservation efforts vital. Visitors can enjoy various activities, such as wine walks and engaging with the local arts scene, which features pottery studios and art galleries. The nearby R62 wine route is perfect for sampling some of the region's finest wines. Fossil Hills serves as your gateway to a peaceful wine country retreat, where history, nature, and relaxation come together harmoniously.

An absolute treat! We spent 4 nights relaxing, kayaking on the private lake, walking, cycling and light 4x4-ing on this quiet private farm. The chalet was fully equipped. The private, wood heated Hot Tub was amazing! The hosts replied to all questions immediately and professionally. A highly recommended holiday spot.

Lovely Farm stay with everything you need. Owners were super helpful and easy to contact. A peaceful break away. Each cottage comes equipped with a hot tub, 2 fishing 3ods and mountain bikes. There are boats on the dam that can be used with life jackets. About 3km outside of Mc Gregor

Absolutely stunning. the cottage was very clean and has everything you might need. The hot tub was really special with breathtaking views. Very much a "middle of nowhere'feel and the perfect break-away. We were really able to disconnect from reality and take in the tranquility and beauty. Thank you so much to Ina & Botha for going the extra mile, packing the fires for us before arrival and making sure the house was in such perfect condition. Wish we could have stayed for the week.
