H. Stagnari: Home of Award-Winning Tannat Wine
The Stagnari family has a rich winemaking history that dates back to 1874, when Pascual Harriague introduced the Tannat grape to Uruguay. Settling in Salto, Harriague identified the ideal soil and climate for cultivating Tannat, leading to the establishment of 200 hectares in the La Caballada area, overlooking the scenic Dayman and Uruguay Rivers. The winery itself is located in La Puebla, Canelones, just 15 minutes from Montevideo's Old City, and is housed in a family residence built in 1890. The estate also features a 10-hectare vineyard dedicated to white grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gewurztraminer.
In the late 19th century, Harriague's wines gained international recognition, winning awards and being exported in oak barrels to France.
Winery Development and Production
In 2000, Héctor Stagnari and his wife Virginia Moreira revitalized the winery, incorporating modern technology to produce premium wines. With a capacity of 600,000 liters, the winery includes an underground cellar designed for aging wines in optimal conditions using French oak barrels. Grapes harvested from La Caballada are transported to La Puebla early in the morning, where a meticulous selection process ensures only the finest grapes are used. These selected grapes are then processed with state-of-the-art machinery and stored in stainless steel tanks for over 20 days at controlled temperatures. After maceration, the wines are aged in French oak barrels for more than a year before bottling.
