Since 1968, Istenič Winery has been a cornerstone of winemaking in the Bizeljsko region of Slovenia. Founded by Janez Istenič, the winery focuses on creating wines that mature gracefully over time. Since 1990, Istenič has blended traditional winemaking techniques with modern technology to produce outstanding sparkling wines.

Pioneers of Traditional Sparkling Wine

The Istenič family has set a precedent in the private production of sparkling wines in Slovenia. They were the first winery in Slovenia and Yugoslavia to adopt the traditional method of sparkling wine production. This process involves a second fermentation in the bottle, which naturally creates the bubbles. After fermentation, any unwanted sediment is carefully removed, resulting in a refined sparkling wine.

The natural conditions in the Bizeljsko region—rich soil, favorable temperatures, and ample sunshine—are ideal for grape cultivation. The primary grape varieties grown at Istenič include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Rumeni Plavec.
