Istenič Winery, Crafting the Best Sparkling Wines

Istenič Winery is producing wines and balsamic vinegar in the Bizeljsko region since 1968. Janez Istenič wanted to make a wine that would take its time to mature. The hard work and commitment towards winemaking take a lot of time and physical effort. Since 1990, the winemakers have combined their traditional methods with modern equipment and technology to produce the best possible sparkling wines.

First Winery with a Traditional Approach

The Istenič Family broke new ground terms in the private production of sparkling wines in the region. No other privately owned wineries produced traditional sparkling wines. They were the first winery in Slovenia and Yugoslavia to make sparkling wines in the traditional method. The traditional sparkling wine method involves second fermentation, which creates the bubbles to take place in the bottle. Unwanted sediment are then, removed, when the fermentation is finished. It is a lot of effort but creates excellent bubbles.

The natural conditions like soil, temperature, rainfall, and sunshine are ideal in the region for vines cultivation. The major varieties of grapes grown in their vineyards include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Rumeni Plavec.

The cold nights and sunny days and the average temperature impart ideal acidity and sugar levels to the grapes that make them perfect for creating unique sparkling wines. Numerous awards and medals are proof of their excellent work and commitment.
