Waking up Sleeping Beauty from a century long slumber
In the 1980s, when viticulture in Slovenia experienced a major boom in terms of professionalism as well as quality, the area of Goričko remained a blind spot on the world map of wine. Wines produced here were neither written nor talked about. Until 2007 when the entrepreneur Stane Polanič established the MAROF wine cellar. The first 15000 bottles of wine under the brand MAROF were produced and soon after it won the Regional Trophy at the prestigious Decanter magazine international wine competition in 2008. In 2018, the German magazine Der Feinschmecker placed the MAROF wine cellar among the six most prestigious wineries in Slovenia. Marof has now become a hub for wine tourists curious about the wines of Slovenia.

Although MAROF is a newly built cellar and winery, their methods and process remain as simple as possible leaning on centennial traditions. The approach to winemaking is a combination of the richness of nature and human knowledge. Paying great respect to the natural rhythm of vine and wine. With minimal interventions, they strive for the precise expression of natural features, elegance, and balance of the terroir.
The best vineyard sites produce healthy and optimally ripe grapes in accordance with organic principles. Grapes are picked and selected manually. The winemaker's interventions are minimal, with great respect to what has been achieved in the vineyard. Spontaneous fermentation, masterful maceration, thoughtful maceration on lees, and only the best wooden containers. Striving for perfection in everything they do, in the vineyard and the cellar. This is the story of Marof.
