In the quiet village of Šmarje near Koper, Sveta Marija on the hill, in the heart of Slovenian Istria, there is a wine and olive farm of Ludvik Nazari Glavina. Santomas Winery in the Slovenia – Primorska region has been a long family tradition as a long line of generations have been running the winery.

Following the respect for Istrian tradition and culture

The winery owner Ludvik’s philosophy is based on respect for tradition and Istrian cultural heritage and honesty in the relationship between agriculture and the environment. Ludvik had invested in new vineyards, olive groves and cellar technology in the early 1990s. He expanded the existing agricultural area to a total of 20 ha of vineyards and 4 ha of olive groves, which are primarily allocated to the cultivation of indigenous Istrian varieties.

The Santomas brand was created in 1997 after the idea of Ludvik Nazari Glavina, who found the author’s record in the book “Topographie de toutes les vinobles” from 1832, which says that the most famous wines from the Koper area are wines called Santomas that they are pleasant to the taste and very drinkable. The Santomas winery has an oenological laboratory, a wine warehouse and a wine bank. It was built in accordance with his respect for the traditions of Istrian architecture and on the recommendation of landscape architects in accordance with the unwritten laws on the architectural suitability of buildings in Slovenian Istria.

The grape varieties cultivated on the vineyards of this winery are Malvazija, Refosk, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

They produce the best quality of red, white, rose, sparkling and dessert wines.
