Matela Winery of Dalmatia

Matela Winery is a cherished family-owned establishment nestled along the stunning Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. With a deep respect for the unique terroir of the region, they craft wines that pay homage to the rich heritage of Croatian viticulture. Their mission is to create wines that appeal to a global audience, offering a diverse selection that caters to various tastes and preferences.

The Terroir of Dalmatia

The Dalmatian region boasts a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, making it Croatia's premier wine-producing area. With an impressive average of 340 sunny days each year, the region's dry and sunny weather, combined with fertile soil, creates ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The compact soil supports robust vine growth, allowing for the production of high-quality grapes.

A Diverse Selection of Wines

Climate plays a crucial role in determining the types of grapes grown and the wines produced. Croatia has a long-standing tradition of winemaking, dating back to Roman times. The favorable climate allows for the cultivation of red, white, and rosé grapes. At Matela Winery, visitors can enjoy a wide array of wines, including red, white, rosé, sweet, and fruit wines, all crafted from grapes grown in their picturesque Dalmatian vineyards.

This is more of a restaurant than anything else. They seem to make wine here in the back, but it was not open nor did it seem like they were offering tastings. I wouldn’t make your way out here specifically if you are just looking up wineries to goto on a whim. If you decide to come, make sure to call or book ahead. The city is cute and out of the hustle and bustle of Split so still worth coming out this way. When we came I looked it up online and it got good reviews so maybe I should have called ahead.
