A Legacy of Fine Wines in Dalmatia
The Matković family has a rich history in winemaking that dates back to 1503, with records of land disputes for vine planting found in the Dubrovnik Archives. Generations of the family have been dedicated to both seafaring and viticulture. In 2003, mechanical engineer Petar Matković returned to his roots, reviving the family’s abandoned vineyards and establishing a small winery focused on producing high-quality Plavac Mali wines from the Pelješac region, specifically from Sutandrija, Dingac-Zaska, and Dingac-Drma.
Quality Over Quantity
At Matković Wines, the emphasis is on quality. The family cultivates their 4-hectare vineyards using traditional methods, avoiding heavy machinery and automated processes. This dedication results in a limited production of around 12,000 bottles each year, ensuring that every bottle reflects their commitment to excellence.
Unique Varietals and Expansion Plans
In addition to Plavac Mali, the Matković family is proud to grow the French grape variety Marselan, making them the only winery in Croatia to produce a 100% Marselan-L'amour wine. Currently, they cultivate 35,000 grapevines, with plans to expand to 40,000. Their diverse range of red wines, from quality to premium and dry to dessert, offers something for every palate at Matković Winery.
