At Sauerweins Weingut, the art of winemaking has evolved alongside agriculture and local industries for centuries. Established in 1924 by Matthias Sauerwein, the winery is located in Palzem, surrounded by lush vineyards. Originally known as Weingut Sonenbuerg from 2003 to 2018, the winery has been crafting exceptional wines since 2019, continuing a legacy of quality and tradition.

Vineyards in Harmony with Nature

As a proud member of the Working Group Controlled Environmentally Friendly Mosel Winegrowing and the Schengen Prestige Charta, Sauerweins Weingut is committed to sustainable practices. The unique terroir, characterized by shell limestone from the Paris Basin, is ideal for growing Elbling and Burgundy varieties. The steep vineyard slopes require meticulous care, from winter pruning to summer grape thinning and hand-picking in the fall, ensuring the highest quality grapes.

Passionate Winegrowers at Work

The winery cultivates a diverse range of over 20 grape varieties, including the historic Elbling, which thrives along nearly 20 kilometers of the Moselle River. Other varieties include Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Dornfelder, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, all contributing to the winery's "Pure Variety" philosophy. Each white wine undergoes barrel fermentation in stainless steel or oak, while red wines mature in small barriques for 1-2 years, enhancing their complexity and flavor.

Stumbled upon Sauerweins when out on a bike ride. Staff knowledgeable, friendly and clearly have a passion for wine. We tasted lots of different wines and returned to buy some at a very reasonable price! Building itself is beautiful and interiors are very high quality.

I went to a wine tasting, which was very good. I love the detailed explanations of the different types of wine. It is easy to buy wine with a Visa. In addition to German and English, Italian is also spoken, which is great. I'm sure French too. The location of the winery is really beautiful with the view of the Moselle and the vineyards. It is the largest winery there. Cycling (without the "e") on the Moselle is very pleasant. You are in France in no time. Hiking is just as nice. If necessary, remember to bring cash in advance, there is no ATM in the town.

A really beautiful winery. The ambience is impressive due to the modern and timeless furnishings, which create an unobtrusive feel-good atmosphere with clear lines, high-quality materials and well-thought-out details. We stayed in a small holiday apartment with a wonderful view of the surroundings. The hosts were always warm and professional. The breakfast is delicious and spoiled with regional delicacies. The booked wine hike was a great experience, which we would happily repeat and can recommend without reservation. Conclusion: The SAUERWEINs winery not only produces really delicious wines, but also offers a wonderful place for a weekend trip or short vacation.

Since I was given a vine sponsorship for my birthday, a personal visit on site was a must. Even the appointment over the phone was extremely friendly. And then we were off. Our stay was accompanied by Alfred and Helen, an absolute dream team. After a short greeting, we headed off to the vineyards, where I was allowed to choose my own vine and attach my plaque. Accompanied by a delicious wine and bright sunshine, it was already perfect up to this point. Back at the winery, we did the big wine tasting and learned many other interesting things about the winery. We had a wonderful time here and are already looking forward to our next visit.

During our stay in the region, we spontaneously stopped to buy a few bottles of wine. Matthias Sauerwein on the intercom and Edith Sauerwein on site were very friendly and relaxed despite the upcoming harvest. The advice was competent and unobtrusive. The wine was, of course, very tasty! 😋 A friendly family with nice employees. We are looking forward to our wine at home!
