Stopham Winery: A Passion for Aromatic White Wines

Stopham Estate Vineyard began its journey in 2007 when winemaker Simon Woodhead planted 21,000 vines across six hectares (15 acres). In 2010, Tom Bartlett joined as an assistant winemaker, just in time for the inaugural vintage. Together, they share a deep commitment to producing high-quality English wines, focusing on sustainability and the unique characteristics of Sussex.

Rich Heritage Surrounding the Winery

Each vintage from Stopham Estate reflects the diverse Sussex landscape. The winery exclusively uses grapes grown on-site, nurturing hand-picked vines to create white wines that showcase vibrant fruit flavors and crisp acidity. Their specialty lies in still wines, primarily crafted from Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Bacchus grape varieties.

In addition to still wines, Stopham Winery produces sparkling wines using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery is housed in a stunning Grade II listed Victorian barn located in the picturesque hamlet of Stopham, within the South Downs National Park. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the South Downs, the River Arun, and the historic St Mary The Virgin church, which dates back to the 11th century.

Winemaking Harmonized with Nature

The vineyard's location was carefully selected for its free-draining sandy soil, favorable southerly aspect, and low altitude. The deep roots of the vines, which can extend over 6 meters, help them withstand drought once established. The vineyard team employs a specialist planting crew from Germany, utilizing lasers to ensure precise spacing between rows, allowing ample sunlight for the vines.
