The Story of Weltevrede

Located in the picturesque Robertson Wine Valley near Bonnievale, Weltevrede Wine Estate has been a family-run establishment for over a century. The estate's roots trace back to 1912 when Klaas Jonker purchased the land and planted the first vineyards. His son, Japie Jonker, began producing wine in 1933, and today, Philip Jonker, the current owner, continues this proud tradition. Philip is especially dedicated to crafting exceptional Chardonnay wines that reflect the estate's heritage.

The Terroir of Weltevrede

Weltevrede Wine Estate benefits from a unique terroir that has been nurtured since 1912. Nestled between a hill and the Breede River, the estate features a variety of soil types, from rocky bedrock to sandy loam. The river provides a refreshing breeze during hot summer afternoons, helping to cool the vines and enhance the quality of the grapes. Philip Jonker skillfully utilizes this diverse terroir to create wines that truly represent the essence of Weltevrede.

Innovative Wines

Weltevrede Wine Estate is known for its creative approach to winemaking and its stunning natural surroundings. Established as a wine brand in the 1940s, Weltevrede is one of South Africa's oldest continuously family-owned wineries, with its trademark registered in February 1950. Over the years, the estate has built a reputation for innovation in wine production. The name 'Weltevrede' translates to 'well satisfied' in Afrikaans, reflecting the joy they hope to bring to every wine lover who enjoys a bottle of their wine.

We visited Weltevrede Wine Estate yesterday and had a fantastic experience by creating our own Cap Classique. A big thanks to Aneldi for her great guidance. We also tasted 3 excellent Cap Classique from the Estate as well as 3 very good Chardonnays. The Restaurant was already closed but we had 2 great fried pies with Bobotie from the Deli. Weltevrede Wine Estate is highly recommendable!

A top-notch winery with a superb restaurant and excellent service. You can buy wine directly and take it home in superb packaging. The food is excellent, with excellent wine pairings.

I was surprised by the beauty and atmosphere of this estate. Beautifully kept from the moment you enter. There are two tasting rooms, one with a more luxurious feel where you can taste the Cap Classique. The other is a bit more relaxed but with a range of wines to choose from. Deli and restaurant on the premises. Worth to add as a stop, make sure of operating hours.

We are visiting Bonnievale and found this place on Google maps. It was a very hot day, we did the normal wine tasting, although we saw that there was an actual tour, for this you would need to book. Wish we were aware of this! There is a delightful deli where you can purchase a variety of goodies. We were also told by our gracious host that we could get cheese etc if we wished to pair our wines. Lots of shady spots to sit, and our little doggie was welcome. The Deli offers cold drinks, salads, smoothies and toasties. We had the caeser salad and pastrami ciabatta. The salad was quite salty, the ciabatta a culinary delight, which included sauerkraut! And i need to take sauerkraut every day. What a pleasant surprise. There were mo smoothies available, they said that it was a very hot day, and it sold out quickly. So all in all i would give it 5 stars. Thank you
