A Unique Story Behind the Name

Yellow Car Country Wines is the creation of Jim and Jean Wooton, a couple whose passion for winemaking began while they were stationed in Germany with the military. Inspired by a friend whose family had been in the wine business for over a century, they learned the art of winemaking in the picturesque Mosel wine region. This experience ignited their desire to start their own winery in the stunning landscapes of Southwest Colorado.

Scenic Views and Local Flavors

From our inviting tasting patio, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of Mesa Verde National Park. We specialize in crafting fruit wines and meads, with a strong emphasis on using locally sourced ingredients. Our fruit wines are made from fruits grown in the surrounding area, while our mead is crafted from honey sourced right from our valley. With over 45 varieties on our menu, each wine is handmade with care and attention to detail.

Great little place to stop and cool off. Stayed here overnight as part of the Harvest Hosts. Very welcoming hosts and nice covered patio area where we met other friendly guests and tasted some great fruit wines. Right off the main road but hard to see at first - look for the yellow roof and the word "CAR". A nice pleasant atmosphere with friendly hosts.

I am at loss for words…. Seriously I am having a hard time describing this gem of a winery. Let me start with the wine, you cannot go wrong with whatever you pick. I LOVED everything I tried. The wine slushies were a hit and I grabbed ones to go! They have so many selections that I wish I was Cabby (the unofficial mascot) and made it my home. The pumpkin pie wine is heaven sent. The wicked peach is everything you didn’t know you needed in your life. Hubby liked the Honey Jack and their Elderberry wine. I also have to mention the Punch Buggy and Tooti Fruiti… they were like summer and the beach got together and had babies. But you cannot leave without trying the wine desserts! I literally wanted to fight my hubby for the last bite. Hubbys words “delish mctish”, i think he loves it! They are also 🐶 friendly which is a huge plus! Their patio is super cute and cozy. The best part is the owners are super friendly and have much pride in their product. We got to learn about how the winery got started and how much love and thought goes into each bottle. I can’t wait to come back and you need to stop by and experience it for yourself.

When my wife and I arrived in Cortez, we thought to try some wine tasting. We looked at all the choices locally and thought we would go here because of convenience and location. We are both super glad we did. If you are looking for traditional wines and stuffy tasting rooms, this might not be for you. I would still recommend trying them nonetheless. The fruit based wines they create are fun and adventurous. The owners are super friendly and Jim truly enjoys his passion to create wines that are not the normal vein. I will be returning here the next time I am in town.

This is a small winery with outdoor patio seating. It was 73° on the day we went with a hint of a breeze. They have a wide array of wines (see the menu) and we did three flights so tried 15 different wines and honey meads. They were all delightful but my husband and I each had our favorites. Your taste buds will tell you which ones you prefer, of course. Jim, our server and the owner, will keep you entertained with his stories! And Chloe, his dog, will greet you when you pull up (if you’re lucky). We snacked on pretzels that he provided, but we did notice that some people brought food with them (wish we had brought some snacks ourselves). We had a delicious experience and would go back if we lived in the area. They are also a Harvest Host location for you RVer’s out there!!
