Among them, the Vinho Verde wine region is known for its naturally light white wines. The Vinho Verde region, delimited in 1908, is Portugal's largest wine-producing region, with an area of 7,000 square kilometers, one of the largest in Europe. The Basto wine region is one of 9 sub-regions of Vinho Verde. It is constituted by four municipalities, being at the west bank of Tâmega river Cabeceiras de Basto and Celorico de Basto and at the east bank, Ribeira de Pena bank, Ribeira de Pena and Mondim de Basto .
With thousands of years of winemaking history, wine plays an important role in the country's culture. Long before the Vinho Verde region was recognized as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) in 1984, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks and Romans were all involved in its development.
It is worth mentioning that the advent of corn in the 16th century left a unique mark on the viticulture of the region. At that time, in order to increase corn production, grapes were forced to be transferred to hedges at the edge of the fields and growers had to pick them from high ladders. Today, you can find some grapes cultivated in the region using the old methods.
The Basto region has a unique terroir - because of the surrounding mountains and the Tâmega River that flows through it - creating gentle slopes and excellent sun exposure. The local soil is dominated by granite and clay schist.
