A Winery Nestled in the Heart of Duncan Peak

Alta Orsa Winery, located in Hopland, California, is a testament to the rich stories of its land and the vision of winemaker Martin Bernal Hafner. Since taking over the stewardship of this 160-acre estate in Mendocino County in 2018, Martin has cultivated vines on this organically farmed land, which has a history dating back to the late 1980s. The winery specializes in crafting estate wines that are unique, balanced, and age-worthy, focusing on varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends, and Syrah.

Wines that Reflect the Land's Character

The single-vineyard wines from Alta Orsa showcase the exceptional quality of their estate vineyard and partner heritage vineyards, each with its own unique narrative. By prioritizing sustainable practices and minimal intervention, the winemaking process allows the true essence of the terroir to shine through. The vineyards are cultivated using organic and regenerative farming techniques, ensuring that the distinct personalities of California's North Coast AVAs are beautifully represented in their appellation wines.

Craftsmanship Meets Elegance in Every Bottle

At Alta Orsa, the dedicated team of vintners works closely together, valuing the hands-on approach required to produce small-lot wines from historic vineyards. Their commitment to meticulous vineyard care ensures that each bottle reflects the authenticity and quality of the land. The estate and vineyard-designate wines are crafted to stand out as exquisite representations of the region, showcasing the artistry and passion behind every sip.

We visited Alta Orsa on our first trips to Sonoma County. What a Gem! Martin & Lucy were top notch hosts to the beautiful winery. They gave us an informed and intimate wine tasting that will leave other tastings feeling less than. I highly suggest you take the trek up the mountain and enjoy a fantastic tasting under a majestic cork tree!

The time we spent at this winery was exceptional. We called the winery on a Monday unsure if tours were happening, and Martin welcomed us eagerly. He took his time with us explaining the wines, the vineyard/land, and the surrounding areas. The wines were delicious - one of the best Chardonnay’s I’ve been introduced to recently. It truly felt like a vip experience that we won’t forget. Highly recommend!

We were a group of 8 who were visiting from Cleveland, OH. We’ve been coming to Napa and Sonoma for many years, and our visit to AO was our favorite by far! Martin, the winemaker, and Lucy, gave us a tour of the beautiful vineyards, a barrel tasting, and then we sat outside under a beautiful cork tree and learned more about the history and wines of AO, formerly Topel, which is the club we first joined many years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed Martin and Lucy’s welcoming hospitality, and the wines are delicious and reasonably priced. My husband and I had recently re-joined the wine club, but several of our crew also joined after tasting the wines. If you have any hesitation about making the trek to AO, DONT, hesitate, the trip is so worth it!! Beautiful property, people and wines. We will definitely be back some day.

We drove the long way to this winery, coming from Mendocino. This scenic approach made our arrival at the destination even more rewarding. The winery location is spectacular. Martin and Lucy provided an informative tour and history of this lovely spot. Our tasting, in the shade of a beautiful old tree, overlooking views to the north, couldn’t have been more enjoyable. All this and we love the wines too! The personalized service and friendly team make this one of our favorite wineries.
